Dallas joined a growing list of Texas cities facing lawsuits filed by the attorney general after its residents voted this month to legalize possession of up to 4 ounces of marijuana. Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center has provided care for a variety of needs, including food and health care assistance, since 2015. The lawsuit accuses the nonprofit of being a "common nuisance" to the neighborhood.

Dallas passed the charter amendment known as Proposition R, which decriminalizes possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. It also prevents police from using the odor of marijuana to establish probable cause to search people without a warrant.

A lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is asking the court to shut down a homeless center he says is a public nuisance.

The homeless center responded, claiming churches are protected to do work that is an expression of their religious practice.
