The earthquake happened around 8:47 p.m. CT, nearly 35 miles west of Whites City, New Mexico, about 200 miles from Lubbock.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the earthquake's epicenter was about 35 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the first earthquake took place Saturday around 7:45 p.m. It registered a 5.4 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was a few miles south of Whites City in a rural area of Texas. People living in the Carlsbad, Roswell and Alamogordo area may have felt that earthquake.
