ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Volcanic activity in northern Ethiopia’s long-dormant Hayli Gubbi volcano subsided Tuesday after an eruption over the weekend that left a trail of destruction in nearby villages and caused flight cancellations after ash plumes disrupted high-altitude flight paths.

T he silencing of the guns in Tigray, a northern region of Ethiopia in which hundreds of thousands of people may have died in a brutal civil war between 2020 and 2022, was a rare example of peacemaking by America and its allies in the Biden years.

The fragile truce largely insulating civilians in northern Ethiopia from war crimes and other abuses may be unraveling.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called for international mediation to ease tensions with Eritrea and secure a resolution that restores direct sea access for his landlocked country.
