The Department of Justice announced Wednesday its civil rights investigation into the Memphis Police Department found the MPD used excessive force, conducted illegal stops, searches and arrests and unlawfully discriminated against Black people.

The DOJ investigation also uncovered "serious concerns" about the police department's treatment of children, as well as deficiencies in training.

The Police Department has been under scrutiny since January 2023, when officers fatally beat Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, after pulling him over on his way home from work.
