A Boston-area skating club reportedly lost two skaters, their mothers, and two coaches in the mid-air plane collision in Washington, D.C.

Passengers aboard the American Airlines flight that collided with an Army helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River included athletes returning from the U.S.

The American Airlines mid-air collision that claimed 67 lives, included six people with ties to The Skating Club of Boston in Norwood, which is the epicenter of the sport in the area.

Two highly-regarded Russian figure skating coaches whose son recently finished fourth at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships were among those feared dead after an American Airlines flight collided with an Army helicopter and crashed into the frigid waters of the Potomac River Wednesday night.

The ice skating legend spoke out after members of the Skating Club of Boston were among those in the plane crash in D.C.

My response was to be with people I care about and love, and I needed support,” said Nancy Kerrigan. “That’s why I’m here. It’s a shock.”

It was an emotional day Thursday at the Skating Club of Boston, as members mourned the loss of six members of the community in a plane crash near Washington, D.C. WBZ-TV's Beth Germano reports.
