The idea for the Kupuna Spelling Bee originated two years ago with teen Riley Regan who partnered with nonprofit groups, including Kiwanis, to organize Kupuna Spelling Bees in 2022.

Josiah Loehrke, a fifth grader at El Sol Elementary, made it through two rounds of the spelling bee, but was eliminated on a written test that narrowed the field of competitors to 99.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee needs an organization to step up to make sure this opportunity is there for South Dakota schools and kids in 2025, executive director Corrie Loeffler said.
