Gov. Kathleen C. Hochul is seeking permission to close five more state prisons with 90 days of notice in the next fiscal year — even as the state’s prison system

The new prison cuts shocked state lawmakers, some of whom are fielding calls from frightened and furious corrections officers and families of prisoners.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed a series of initiatives to reform prisons as part of her budget. It includes requiring body worn cameras to be used at all times and creating a prison oversight board. Hochul is also seeking authority to close up to five prisons.
